Steven Hawkes

Growing up, I watched my grandmother who painted beautiful acrylic landscapes. The walls in her home were covered from floor to ceiling with her work. As we spent time painting together, I developed the same passion for art.

Although I have experience in most traditional mediums, I had never had a favorite until I experimented one day with a wood burning pen. Pyrography was perfect for me. I was motivated by its unforgiving nature and perceived limitations.

I can't say that I have a favorite style or subject. I am driven by the emotional response. I am inspired by the way that light hits an object, a texture, even a facial expression. The majority of my work is custom. With commissioned pieces, I focus on an element of each subject that moves me and that will connect with its owner.

My goal is to continue to push pyrography to its limits. I have a great deal of respect for it as a timeless art form and hope to honor it with my work.
